Day 8 - Fourtieth Camp Blog Entry

July 27th, 2008 by Steve

Second session of diabetes camp at Texas Lions Camp is often populated with more returning campers compared to the first session. Since the final session extends a few days into August, it also tends to mean that fewer school athletes and band members attend since most must return by August 1 to start fall practice and tryouts.

Parents who submit their child’s materials to apply to camp early in the year, say January, tend to get in based on the first come first served principle. Once each age and gender group is filled per cabin, a waiting list is created. Based on knowledge of what percentage of accepted campers withdraw by the start of camp, the camp tends to over-book campers. So far this has been a successful policy and allows us to keep camp full. It also means that placement on the waiting list usually means it may be a long shot getting in. Just remember: the early applier gets the slot!

Our camper to med staff ratio will be a bit larger this session too. By now, the returning med staff and those staying over from session1 are well versed in the routine and can each handle larger numbers of campers. We’re constantly looking for qualified med staff for the camp. Potential applicants can submit their names to our Camp Coordinator, Patsy Reyes, at Patsy.Reyes_at_dchstx.org. Application materials are transmitted online in pdf format. A word of advice: wait until the fall to forward any names to Patsy. Camp is surely a four letter word in the weeks following our return to home!
