Day 8 - Forty-Third Camp Blog Entry
July 27th, 2008 by SteveIt’s a little after 4:15 PM. We’ve gotten over 200 campers processed in a little over 3 hours. That’s warp speed. Lots and lots of pumps. Too soon to say just how many right now. We’ll have the final number soon. As the campers arrived at their cabins, we checked their BG levels. We’ve found several highs and even a bad insulin pump infusion site who had already had time to develop ketones!

Now, the med staff will gather the current data on each of their campers and get to the cabins to start assessing their knowledge and skills. At 6 PM it’s off to the picnic area where the a Lions club from San Angelo, Texas will be serving brisket sandwiches.
We have 5 campers with celiac disease and one with cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD). We only take one CFRD per camp. Current practice is not to have camps for children with this condition so that they don’t pass around certain bacteria to each other that the rest of us are immune to.

We saw a number of unusual insulin regimens. Most parents are willing to let us work with these schedules and make changes where needed.
Opening ceremonies starts at 8 PM.
We’ve just dived head first into Session 2. Much more to come.
