Day 8 - Forty-Second Camp Blog Entry
July 27th, 2008 by SteveMed staff orientation is virtually complete for Session 2. The core med staff has done a fantastic job with this process. I’ve never seen incoming med staff so relaxed as they prepare for the onslaught on campers and families in the next few hours. A quick look back: last session, we had 108 out of 203 campers pumping. 47% were using Minimeds, 31% on Animas pumps, 20% used the Deltec Cozmo, and 0.9% (1 camper) used an Omnipod. We expect as many pumps this session also.

As I was touring the camp out sites in my Kawasaki Mule last evening, I saw the results of the colony of raccoons which have settled around across the camp. They are quite bold and will not hesitate to get into unlocked bins, trash cans, and cabinets. Lots of trash strewn about. The things one can do with opposable thumbs! I’m afraid their days are numbered once camp is over next week.
So…in the waning minutes before campers arrive, cabin-based diabetes supplies and equipment are being collected and organized into toolkits and backpacks. Midnight check bags are also being packed. There is order amongst the chaos. We are now all in our collective orange colored shirts with our “kangaroo” theme logo. We change them each year. Many staff like to collect the shirts since they specific for the year attended.
Well, it’s now off to lunch. Check in begins promptly at 1PM. We’re about to set sail once again. Hopefully the waters will be calm. But we are prepared to weather any storm we might encounter.
